There are about five main product categories of air purifiers, and I've tried most of them. However, the ionic category always seems to be the best air purifies for me! On this site, I will share with you some of the positives and negatives of each category, and ultimately why to me the question is not "What's the best air purifier to buy?", but rather "What's the best IONIC air purifier to buy?"!
While there are a number of different categories of air cleaners or purifiers, don't panic. Here's some critical information about each category.
What Are the Categories of Air Purifiers?
As I said before there are five main categories, and here's how they stack up:
- Carbon: The carbon material within these purifiers are porous (i.e., filled with small holes). As contaminated air passes though these pores, gaseous contaminates actually to a solid form and attach to the material. These carbon filters are often paired with other media in combination filters, like with the Hepa filters.
Positives: Works well on smaller particulates that can pass through the pores (e.g., smoke and odors)
Negatives: does not work well against airbonrne organisms or allergens (like pollen). This is why it's often paired with another medium. If Carbon medium is disturbed, contaminates can be re-released. - Hepa: Here a cloth like material is used the filter out "larger particles". To facilitate the capture of these particles a fan is used to increase airflow in the room through this cloth like material.
Positives: works well on allergens and micro-organisms
Negatives: does not work well against smaller particles (i.e., smoke and odors) - Ionic: These purifiers do not use pores or a "filter". They use a plate or needles, which are electrically charged. They create electrically charged gas or ions that attach to the particles in the air as they pass by. Once chraged these particles are drawn to and attach to a collection plate. These purifiers come with or without a fan.
Positives: works well on small particles throughout the room, even without a fan. The version without the fan make no noise and use very little electricity.
Negatives: does not kill micro-organisms, but does capture them. Does not work well on odors. - Ozone: these air purifiers produce ozone gas which will destroy odors.
Positives: destroys all odors!
Negatives: does not work well against allergens. Should only be used in unoccupied rooms. Breathing ozone gas is unhealthy. - Ultraviolet Air: These air purifiers use ultraviolet lamps to purify the air. These lamps actually kill any bacteria, germs, viruses and any other living micro-organisms that are forced by.
Positives: kills the airborne critters that make us sick
Negatives: does nothing for against odors, smoke, etc.
How Do You Select the Best Air Purifier For You?
- Make a prioritized list of your air quality concerns - Remember, no one air purifier does everything! There are some trade offs to make, or you may need a variety of purifiers to deal with all of your concerns. I don't have a problem with odors or smoke in my house, so the ionic purifiers work wonderfully for me!
- How much do you want to spend? - And I'm not just talking about the initial cost of the unit! Like with the ultraviolet air purifiers, you'll have to replace the lamps over time, or with others you may have to replace the filter. With ionic air purifiers the collection media can usually be easily removed and cleaned.
- Is noise level a concerns? The fanless ionic purifiers make ZERO noise!
